The One Woman Book Club

Vanishing Acts - Jodi Picoult

Part of me thought I should be embarassed that I was reading this book and that I was going to actually post it and admit that I was reading it but then I thought - this is MY book club and MY blog! I can read whatever I want! I equate Jodi Picoult's books to John Grisham's. They're pretty melodramatic and usually involve some sort of lawsuit and in the end the villian's actions are justified and everything turns out ok in the end. She's a decent writer and they are entertaining. And while I would probably benefit from reading something a little more meaningful, my brain is pretty full these days with house obsessions/dreams (is it so wrong that I go on Google Maps everyday to look at my house-to-be?) so this book pretty much fit the bill. I started reading it on the weekend when my brain was particularly mottled by my cold so I should be through it and on to something else by next week!

This past weekend my body gave in to the high anxiety levels and excitement I felt all week and I got a seriously yucky head cold. Needless to say, I finally finished this book! As I mentioned before, it was disappointing. Her books, while in the category of "light reading" as far as I am concerned, usually have some depth. But I felt that rather than truly give the story depth, she gave it a bit of "dark" and tried to let that carry it through. I don't know if that makes sense - but I just didn't find this one stuck with me or made me laugh the way her other books have.

My rating is a: Meh.

I'm still working on the same book. It doesn't usually take me this long to get through a book like this but I think it's a combination of various factors:
- exhaustion
- house buying stress
- my body is totally screwed up from the two factors listed above
- the book is gigantic and weighs about 8lbs

Update and review to follow. Hopefully this weekend.

The Brightest Star in the Sky by Marian Keyes

I generally like Marian Keyes' books. They're light but have some depth and are well - written. I bought this one looking for exactly that. I'm not sure that I've found it yet. It's a bit odd and hard to follow, although that could be because I'm reading little bits of it before going to sleep at night and I've been totally stressed lately so I'm retaining very little.
I'm on my own this weekend so I'm planning to stretch out on the couch with some wine and a kitty on my lap and get caught up.
I'll rate this puppy later!

And now this:
I'm So Happy For You by Lucinda Rosenfeld

Loved it! Funny and honest. I liked her other books too. A very quick read. I'm actually still working on Too Close to the Falls but I ordered this one and it came really fast so I read it right away and finished it last night. Good, light but smart read.
Two thumbs up!

I'm now onto:
Too Close to the Falls by Catherine Gildiner

My partner has encouraging me to read this book for a couple of years now. He and I have very different taste in books and I rarely like the same things he does (I read fiction, he reads non-fiction. He reads books about bugs and I don't.)
My sister sent it to me a few months ago in a package containing a whole stack of books (including the one below) so I thought I should give it a go.
It is very funny. I'm quite enjoying it so far. I think one of the most amazing memoirs I've ever read is :

"The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls

It is a fantastic read and I would recommend it to anyone. You just can't believe it's not fiction.
Anyway - liking Too Close to the Falls. I love how she captures not just the experiences of a child but what the perception of the child was in each story. She not only remembers events, she remembers how she understood them as a very young child.
A great read!

I've decided to start a post about reading. I read a lot. It's one of my most favorite things. So I thought it was time to start making some recommendations!

Right now I'm reading:
The Other Queen by Philippa Gregory.

I love her books. I love historical fiction - I feel like I'm learning something while I'm entertained!
Truth be told, it's not as good as some of her other books but I am enjoying it. I'd give it one thumb up!
