Wheeler Dealer

This week, my fella and bought a new truck.
(You may recall that he got in an accident two weeks ago and our little car was totalled.)
I have to say - the entire process has been very unsettling.
We (well he) did a lot of research and in doing so, discovered that there is a motto of car dealers everywhere and that is:

"You didn't ask."

They say this is response to questions such as:

"I didn't know I could get the vehicle for less than the asking price!"

You didn't ask.

"I didn't know that I could get some upgrades for free!"

You didn't ask.

And so it goes.

I think what's unsettling is that you either go totally overboard with the paranoia and don't believe anything they say or you get totally shammed by them.

Trust is a powerful thing.

So is the internet.

How did it go for us?

We did get the truck for less than asking but  when the salesman called to tell us what are options were we were faced with taking a vehicle that had extras on it that we had to pay for or wait 8 weeks to get one exactly as we requested.

We couldn't wait 8 weeks because we had a rental car that costs $200 a week.

We are also moving in 8 weeks.
So we got it.

It is beautiful but the whole thing was such a learning experience.
Here's my advice:
Do your research
Be prepared to walk away
Remember that most of it is for show - when he goes to "talk to his manager", he doesn't really. He knows exactly what his negotiating power is and he does it all on his own.
Stick to your guns
and say no.
A lot.
To the extended warranty.
To the undercoating.
To the power paint protector thingy that doesn't even work very well.
no.no.no.

Just say no and if they don't give you what you want.
Walk away.
