the pitter patter of little feet

Last week my fella called me at work and said he heard a strange noise.

It was a sound like someone dropping things.

The cats were nearby so he knew it wasn't them

so....

what was it?

I hadn't heard it so didn't really give it a second thought. 

It's an old house.

An old semi-detached house so while there is a double thick wall of masonry between us and our neighbours,

sound can travel.

And today

I heard it.

I said -

it sounds like a little kid running across the floor.

And he said-

but it's not on the ceiling, 

it's further away.

The only other place is the attic.

Huh.

The attic.

It's not animals - it's not the scritchy, scratchy noise they make

It's the sound of thumpy little feet.
