Thanksgiving Outing
We went out to Humber Bay Park for a stroll
through the mist and gloom this Thanksgiving Day.
It was nice to get out,
take a few pictures
and see what our old neighbourhood now looks like
(we lived near there, oh, almost 10 years ago.)
I don't miss it,
but it's still a nice part of Toronto.
Nature and water,
side by side.
This is not a real raven, but merely a look-a-like.
There were a series of them on posts in one section of the park
with their heads tilted at different angles
What made them more interesting was that birds were nesting inside them.

the happy mondays
This is one thing I love about 5:30am wake ups. Orange streaky sky, the quiet and a bit of time for your brain to wake up and shift from weekend to weekday.
Happy Monday.

a river runs through it
If you haven't been to Niagara Falls recently
(and live nearby)
you should go.
The ice accumulation is incredible.
It feels like you're in a different world.
A different, arctic world.
It's beautiful.
As much as I hope for the end of winter,
I am grateful that I got to see this.

i almost never regret carrying my camera...
There are so many things to focus on in this photo.
It's not just the Universal Church
or even the Adult Time Adult Video across the street from the Universal Church.
The highlight has to be the legs and but hanging out of the used clothing donation bin.
It's an interesting neighbourhood I live in.

love affair
You don't often (ever) hear people say they are having a love affair with Toronto.
It just doesn't sound right.
But the truth is, I do love Toronto.
It's a great city.
But why?
I have a new co-worker who is from Vancouver.
She grew up here but had to move back to care for her mother.
It was a bittersweet decision.
She came back to care for her mother who is ill
but she pines for "her city".
Her beautiful Vancouver.
Her beautiful Vancouver.
I am from Nova Scotia.
It is really beautiful there too.
When I tell people I'm from there, they almost always say
"oh I love the east coast!"
It's worthy of their love.
But do I want to live there?
Not at this point in my life.
I miss the ocean.
It makes me ache when I think of it
but I don't want to live in such a small place
At least not now.
People may not think that Toronto is beautiful.
It may not be obvious
there are no mountains or ocean.
It may not be obvious
there are no mountains or ocean.
But the beauty is there - you just have to look for it.
I'm going to try to photograph some of the beautiful bits
and share them here.
I'll call them
"my city"
because I think it's high time
for a little hometown pride.

This is an old photo
but it's one of my favorite statues in the city.

family day in high park
It was chilly but beautiful.
Days like that redeem winter in my mind
not that I really dislike winter.
There is a lot to love.
One day last week as I walked to the subway station in the morning
I looked at the trees
and thought how amazing they are.
They look dead
but they aren't.
They are hibernating.
In a matter of weeks
(yes, quite a few weeks, I admit)
they will come back
and so will we.
But until then,
I hope I have more chances to get out and embrace the cold.
Because it has a lot to offer
and we more to gain in doing so
than by just watching from our windows.
