In case you were wondering, these are tank defences from WWII that were left on a beach in Northumberland.

Someone painted them to look like dice. You can see Bamburgh castle in the distance.

There is something magical about them, I think,

Grandma's Superhero Therapy

I decided that I need some new regular reading material.

Expand my horizons a little.

Learn some stuff.

I came upon a site called 

My Modern Metropolis

and have since put it into my regular rotation.

It's a site of my favorite things 

art

design

photography

(which I happen to think is art)

They featured one collection called Grandma's Superhero Therapy.

A photographer named Sacha Goldberger discovered that his grandmother Frederika was depressed and lonely.

To cheer her up, he dressed her up as a superhero and photographed her in a variety of poses and scenarios, depicting her incredible strength and her life as a superhero.

Apparently the photos went viral:

With the unexpected success of this series, titled "Mamika" (or grandma in Hungarian), Goldberger created a MySpace page for her. She now has over 2,200 friends and receives messages like: "You're the grandmother that I have dreamed of, would you adopt me?" and " You made my day, I hope to be like you at your age."

The photos are hilarious

but touching at the same time.

I love strolling down memory lane

so I love the annual the year in review(s) that sprout up every year at this time.

I do a lot of 

"oh I forgot about that!"

or

"I didn't know he/she died".

It's good to take a look back

and learn a thing or two.

(and perhaps make a resolution to follow the news more closely.)

I recently discover a site called Lightbox.

It's a huge collection of photos from events and happenings all over the world.

They have done a collection called

New Love: Vivan Maier

Last night I read an article in the Globe and Mail about a photographer named

Vivian Maier.

She was a nanny who lived in New York and Chicago

and she took thousands and thousands of photographs.

She never showed them to anyone.

They are amazing.

She also took tons of self-portraits.

I admit I'm biased because I love this style of photography.

I think it's the spontaneity of it that I love.

Walker Evans and Robert Frank are a couple others that were similar

but they were better known in their day.

If you're lucky enough to be in or going to New York, there's an exhibition going on now at the Howard Greenberg Gallery.

There's also one in Los Angeles at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery starting this weekend and running until January 28th.

You should go.
